Massive, record breaking box-office numbers were expected from the Salman Khan starrer ‘Jai Ho’ that hit cinema screens on January 24, 2014. While the film did good business on the first weekend, it did not hit bull’s eye if you draw comparisons with Salman’s super successful stint at the movies in the recent past.
According to a news report in Koimoi, ‘Jai Ho‘ minted Rs. 17.55 crore on Friday while the Saturday collections dipped further and box office collections stopped at Rs. 16 crore.
Further to reports in Koimoi, with the Republic Day coinciding with a Sunday, more footfalls were expected and this Salman Khan and Daisy Shah starrer managed to rake in moolah worth Rs. 25 crore. The overall weekend collections were limited to just Rs 58.50 crore, the report adds.
While a start like this usually translates into the ‘hit film’ category, however for a Salman Khan starrer who manages to pull crowds by the dozens with his films, we can say the film hasn’t left that impression with its collections.
Salman’s track record so far has been near perfect with his last five films (namely ‘Dabangg‘, ‘Ready‘, ‘Bodyguard‘, ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘, ‘Dabangg 2‘) managing to smoothly achieve the magical Rs 100 crore figure.
While a slow start dipped the early figures, the BO numbers show the pace picking up towards the later half of the weekend. While it is too early to predict the fate of ‘Jai Ho‘ at the BO, a slow start has raised many eyebrows. Let’s wait and watch for the final report card to come out.
